NAME: Hubert von Vestra
CANON: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
CANON POINT: Crimson Flower route, Chapter 11: Throne of Knowledge (specifically just after entering the Holy Tomb, but before Byleth sits on the throne and Edelgard reveals her plan)
AGE: 20
BACKGROUND: Hubert @ Fire Emblem Wiki | Fire Emblem: Three Houses
PERSONALITY:
- The first thing one needs to know about Hubert is that he always is - and always will be - loyal to Edelgard. His loyalty is unwavering and everything he does is for her, and her alone.
It would be easy to assume that wherever Edelgard goes, Hubert will follow, but that's not the case. Hubert is his own person, with his own goals and dreams and ambitions, and he will not hesitate to do what he thinks is best for Edelgard, even if she has given him orders not to do whatever it is he's set his mind to. Hubert holds very little respect or interest in their stations, and during his last support conversation with Edelgard, he offers his neck up if she believes he should be punished for disobeying the Emperor. He respects her, not the position. Hubert firmly believes that he knows what's will help her and her dreams, and will absolutely take any steps necessary to help her achieve those dreams.
House Vestra has served as the emperor's shadow since the formation of the Empire, so Hubert's job is primarily to serve as Edelgard's enforcer. The position has other duties, but he spends his time in game threatening, killing, gathering information, making plans, and moving the plot forward behind the scenes. He works with Those Who Slither in the Dark because they are vital to achieving the world that Edelgard wants. This doesn't mean he respects them, and he is openly rude and snide to the ones he interacts with. He hates them for what they've done to Edelgard, but he is willing to put aside his personal feelings for the world Edelgard wishes to create.
The respect he shows Edelgard is not because of her birthright, but rather because of who she is as a person. His loyalty is the product of losing Edelgard for three years; Hubert says that it felt as though he'd lost the use of his limbs to lose her, and he spent three days fighting off his father's men in an attempt to find her - all of this happened when he was ten. Hubert is very devoted to Edelgard.
This unwavering loyalty sounds great, but in practice it leads to Hubert being rather messed up. He has little reason to care about playing nice with others, and fully embraces his role as Edelgard's enforcer. He looks creepy because he's playing it up; he seems rude because it benefits him to be. He plays into people's expectations of him and his role, and enjoys intimidating people. Even with his classmates he shows little respect for their titles or positions and finds none of them to be worthy of the same respect he shows Edelgard.
This is due to the fact that Hubert is perhaps the least trusting person in the game. He holds everyone at arms' length - including Edelgard. Hubert believes in Edelgard and cares for her, but paradoxically doesn't trust her with personal information. This is because Hubert is firmly of the belief that he is her weapon (and she doesn't need to know the details of what he has done for her) and sees no reason to have her see him as a person, and part of this is because Hubert has difficulties opening himself up. Friendship is a difficult and it usually takes a lot for him to consider anyone a friend. Even then, there are only a few times in which he admits anything personal or discusses his feelings. He sees himself as Edelgard's weapon first.
That isn't to say that Hubert is unaware of others' feelings. He goes out of his way to avoid hurting those he likes. In his supports with Bernadetta, he attempts to tone down his menacing and intimidating actions and words, and when she wants to get used to them, he doubles down on it to try to help her. It's a backwards way to go about it, but that sums up all of his attempts at helping others: he is skilled at helping with physical problems, less so with anything emotional. He's aware of this as well; he knows he cannot help Edelgard with the trauma she's been through and allows others to help with that. Hubert is able to eventually reach a point where he can trust others with Edelgard's safety, security, and her emotional well-being.
At his current canon point, Hubert is still wary of others, but is starting to befriend his classmates. He likes most of them and at least finds them useful in combat, but he wouldn't hesitate to turn on them if necessary. Hubert is not a good person, and even though he does try to be kind, ultimately he will always be willing to harm those closest to him. He kills his father in order to take his place as Minister of the Imperial Household. He's killed countless people who have stood in Edelgard's way, and works with Those Who Slither in the Dark despite all they have done to Edelgard. After the timeskip in canon, Hubert is much less aggressive, showing that he's finally accepted his former classmates as both friends and people he can trust. It takes a lot to get him to that point, but he is willing to open up more once he reaches it.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses allows the player character (Byleth) to instruct their students and reclass them as they see fit. I will be following Hubert's canon class line: Noble → Monk → Dark Mage → Dark Bishop. This basically just means that Hubert is a dark mage, and pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the class. He's very skilled with offensive magic, but cannot take any physical hits and is much better suited to long-range combat.
Hubert's skills are never remarked on as being incredible or noteworthy, though he can be a pretty powerful mage in game. He has access to five dark magic spells, some of which have nasty side effects like rendering a unit incapable of movement after combat, or having a high chance for a critical hit and dealing more damage. Most of this doesn't translate well to roleplay, so basically he's just got some cool dark magic spells at his disposal, but nothing overpowered.
There is one exception to this: Hubert's version of the Warp spell. This spell seems to be dark magic, although it is never a spell he can use in game. It's basically just a cutscene spell so people can be moved about as needed, which is why we know next to nothing about it. Considering that it has the power to move the player's entire army, it's probably pretty powerful? Anyway, the point is that since I have no idea how it works, I'd like to nerf it entirely. No more teleporting for him.
Like all characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Hubert is capable of picking up and using a bunch of different weapons, but given how low his strength stat is, you do not want to let him fight physically. He's been trained with a lance enough that he can defend himself (though it isn't anywhere near as effective as his dark magic). Otherwise he relies solely on reason magic (offensive magic; in his case, dark magic) and has no training whatsoever in faith magic (healing/white magic).
While less a power and more "a thing he can do", Hubert is also very knowledgeable about how to kill people in various ways, though he's pretty fond of poisons. Thankfully, that is very specific to what's available in his world, and it's not like he'll be going around poisoning people all the time anyway.
